About this pattern

Two toys from exactly the same pieces. Crochet the parts once, and where you put the two-colour piece decides what you have made: sitting on top like a cap, it is a bird; sitting underneath, it is a fish.

That single idea is what makes this pattern such a pleasure. Same rounds, same stitch counts, same little scalloped trim — and two completely different, gloriously bright creatures come out the other end.

Why You'll Love This Pattern:

  • One pattern, two toys — not a variation, a genuine transformation. Make both and they look like a matched pair.
  • That scalloped trim — the zigzag edge reads as feathers on the bird and teeth on the fish, worked into the free back loops of Round 21. It is the detail everyone asks about, and it is four lines of instruction.
  • A dotted two-colour body — one contrast stitch after every three, worked plainly as you go, no chart to read and no stranding on the outside.
  • Every round has its stitch count and repeats are written as clear brackets.
  • Go wild with colour — the sample is coral and turquoise with hot pink and yellow, but the construction works in any palette you like, and you can bring in more colours mid-way.
  • Genuinely fun to finish — the assembly section is written to be played with: fins, tails, crests, eyes and legs all go on however you fancy.
  • Small and fast — perfect for markets, nursery decor, mobiles and gifts.

What's in the PDF

  • Round-by-round instructions for the head and body, the two-colour piece, fins, tail, eyes and crest
  • The feather / teeth trim, written out with photos of it being worked
  • Full abbreviations key in US crochet terms
  • A "notes before you begin" section covering spirals, brackets and the crab stitch
  • Assembly and finishing, with room to improvise

Skill level

Advanced beginner. Almost everything is single crochet in a spiral. The two extras — reverse single crochet (crab stitch) for the trim and working into front or back loops — are both explained, and neither is hard once you have seen it once.

You will need

  • Yarn: Alize Cotton Gold and YarnArt Jeans, or any similar sport/DK cotton blend, in a body colour plus contrasts
  • Hook: to suit your yarn — the sample uses 1.7 mm for a tight, dense fabric
  • Also: safety eyes · toy stuffing · sewing needle · stitch marker · fine yarn for embroidery · scissors
