About this pattern

A 21 cm burgundy dragon with pink scales, a ribbed belly, big glass eyes and wings held open on a wire frame.
He stands on his own feet, his arms and legs turn, and the wings hold whatever position you bend them into. This is the detailed, take-your-time kind of make.

What you get

  • 31-page PDF, instant download after purchase
  • Photographs on almost every page — the assembly section alone runs ten pages, with pinned close-ups showing exactly where each piece sits before you sew it
  • Round-by-round instructions with stitch counts, and a symbols list up front
  • A full face-sculpting and decoration section: eyelids, underlip, nostrils, eyebrows, cheek tightening points

The build

The dragon is jointed. Arms and legs attach with 35 mm discs and a 50 mm splint rather than being sewn flat, so they rotate and he can be posed sitting or standing. A paperboard or thin-plastic insole goes into each foot so he stands square instead of sagging.

The wings have a wire frame. Each one is worked flat in two colours — the membrane in light red, then dark red worked back along the remaining half-stitches to build the ribs — with 0.9 mm wire run through and inserted into the body seven rows down from the head. That's what keeps them spread rather than drooping against his back.

The scales and spots are separate pieces: 13 of detail №1, plus details №2 and №3 in their own counts, pinned down the head, back and tail in a counted sequence. The ridged belly panel is worked flat in turning rows and sewn on, which is what gives that segmented, armoured front.

The face is where the character comes from — 18 mm glass eyes on white felt discs, crocheted eyelids, a sculpted underlip arcing under the muzzle, embroidered nostrils and eyebrows, and four marked tightening points pulled through to shape the cheeks. He also gets a little scarf, with the length left up to you.

Skills & materials

  • Advanced. Long project with jointed limbs, wire work, flat and in-the-round crochet, a lot of small separate pieces and careful pinned assembly. Comfortable amigurumi experience assumed
  • Gazzal Jeans (50 g / 170 m) in dark red and light red, plus YarnArt Jeans in white and red. About 2 skeins of the main colour and 1 of each additional. Any similar cotton-blend works
  • 2.5 mm hook, fibrefill
  • 18 mm glass eyes with 18 mm white felt discs, two 35 mm joint discs and a 3.2/50 mm splint, 0.9 mm wire for the wings, paperboard or thin plastic for the insoles, strong sewing thread, glue for the eyes

The burgundy-and-pink colourway is an adaptation — the pattern notes which shades replaced the original's sea wave and turquoise, so you can take it back that way or anywhere else you like.
