About this pattern

A big, squashy rust-coloured reindeer in super chunky chenille, with soft cream antlers, a cream muzzle and four cream paws.
He's 27 cm sitting and 30.5 cm standing — properly huggable rather than shelf-sized — and in chenille at this weight he works up fast.

⚠️ Written in UK crochet terms

This pattern uses UK terminology. If you work in US terms:

  • UK dc (double crochet) = US sc (single crochet)
  • UK htr (half treble) = US hdc (half double crochet)
  • UK tr (treble) = US dc (double crochet)

Stitch counts are unaffected — only the names change. The head is worked in trebles and the smaller pieces in double crochet, so it's worth checking which you're reading at the top of each section.

What you get

  • 5-page PDF, instant download after purchase
  • Round by round with stitch counts on every line, and a photo of the finished toy from front and back
  • A complete spec panel — yarn weight, hook, skill level, tension note, supplies and both finished sizes
  • Pieces for both a sitting and a standing version

The build

The head starts from a chain, not a ring — a 9-chain worked down both sides into an oval, which is what gives him a long muzzle rather than a round ball face. Rounds 5 to 9 then decrease and increase again across part of the round only, shaping the dip between muzzle and brow so the face has a profile instead of being flat.

The antlers are built from separate small pieces — inner points and end points made as little stuffed cylinders from 5- and 6-stitch magic rings, then assembled, so you get branching antlers without any awkward shaping mid-round.

The ears use a flatten-and-close finish with a pinch at the base: you sew the first and third stitches of the closing row together, which folds the ear into a proper cupped shape rather than leaving it flat.

Skills & materials

  • Intermediate (2 stars). Magic ring, working both sides of a chain, increases and decreases placed part-way through a round, flatten-and-close, and assembly
  • Super chunky chenille, 120 m per 100 g — 200 g dark brown and 120 g tan
  • 4 mm hook — deliberately small for the yarn weight, which is what keeps the fabric tight enough that no stuffing shows through. The pattern notes tension isn't critical otherwise
  • 16 mm safety eyes, stitch marker, tapestry needle, toy stuffing

Chenille is forgiving on stitch definition and very quick at this gauge — a good project if you want a large finished toy without a large finished timescale.

Note: the pattern inside the file is titled "Marvin the Moose" — same animal, same instructions, just the designer's working name for him.
