About this pattern

A 31 cm sleeping doll with a mane of curly pumpkin-orange hair, a patchwork dress in four autumn shades, striped leg warmers and a long pointed pumpkin hat with a curl at the tip. She's the centrepiece kind of doll — the one that sits on a shelf all autumn and gets picked up by everyone who walks past.

What you get

  • 37-page PDF, instant download after purchase
  • Photographs on almost every page — the knee join, the hair layering, the patchwork joins and the hat shaping are each given their own spreads
  • US crochet terms, round by round and row by row with stitch counts on every line
  • A colour-layout diagram for the patchwork skirt and a gauge check built into the head

The build

The doll is worked in off-white at a tight gauge — 10 sc to 3 cm on a 1.5 mm hook with two strands held together, giving a dense, firm fabric that holds its shape. The head runs 39 rounds to 78 stitches at its widest, with a checkpoint at round 9 and a finished circumference of 25.5 cm. Legs start from a ch-6 oval sole, run 37 rounds, then get a proper folded knee join worked through both layers and picked up again around the front loops — the pattern gives this five photos because it's the fiddly bit.

The hair is 16 long crocheted strands — ten pumpkin, six mustard — each one a 101-chain worked back with hdc increases so it twists into a spiral curl. They go on in three passes, pinned and sewn in a spiral from the front of the head backwards, with a whole run of pages showing the placement at each stage.

The dress is the showpiece: a bodice worked flat with chain-loop armholes, then 30 separate patchwork squares in three colours, joined into three strips with chain loops and attached to the bodice, with six chained ties threaded through the loops and knotted at the front. The leg warmers use worked-in ridge rows for texture and four ties each.

The hat starts from a 4-stitch cord and grows over 43 rounds into a long tapering cone with a ridged band and two 150-chain ties. The tip is gathered afterwards to make the curl. Her face is entirely embroidered — closed sleeping eyes between rounds 11 and 12, with cheeks shaped and coloured using dry pastels.

Skills & materials

  • Advanced. A long project with flat and in-the-round work, BLO/FLO ridge techniques, a shaped knee join, colour joining and a lot of assembly. Not a first doll
  • Drops Safran, 50 g / 160 m, held double — off-white 18 (1 ball), pumpkin 67 (2.5 balls), mustard 66 (2 balls), moss green 60 (1 ball)
  • 1.5 mm hook, stitch markers, large needle, polyester fibrefill
  • Dry pastels for the face; embroidery floss or sewing thread for the eyes

Gauge matters on this one — the doll is sized off it. There's a check after head round 9 so you find out early rather than at round 39.
