About this pattern

A soft 28 cm plush snowman in a red velvet sweater with an embroidered snowflake, a matching bobble hat and a carrot nose. He has a properly sculpted face — thread-shaped eye sockets, embroidered lashes and a stitched smile — which is what lifts him out of snowman-shaped-ball territory.

What you get

  • 15-page PDF, instant download after purchase
  • US crochet terms, round by round with stitch counts on every line
  • Photographs throughout, including pinned close-ups of every face-shaping point
  • Notes on hook choice and stuffing technique before you start

The build

Body, head and all — the legs are made first in light brown for the boots, then joined into the body at round 10 by working nine stitches through both pieces at once. The arms join the same way at round 18. The head is then worked straight on from the body without cutting the yarn, so there's no neck seam to sew and nothing to wobble.

The face shaping gets its own illustrated section. Using a long doll needle and a single strand of fine thread, you pass through six marked points and pull — which sinks the eye sockets and gives the face real structure. Both the sculpting and the eyelashes are mapped point by point against the photographs, including exactly which round each point sits in.

The clothes are made flat in red velvet yarn. The sweater is a 37-chain worked in turned rows with chain-arch armholes — a nice trick where you skip six stitches, bridge them with a chain, then work into the arch rather than into the chains on the way back, which keeps the armhole smooth. Sleeves are picked up around each armhole and worked in the round. The hat is a flat rectangle gathered at the crown with a 4 cm pompom.

Skills & materials

  • Intermediate. The pattern states plainly that it teaches no basic stitches — you need magic ring, sc, inc, dec and working through two layers already. Joined limbs and face sculpting are the demanding parts
  • Plush / chenille yarn, 100 g / 120 m — the designer uses Wolans Bunny Baby in white (a little over 1 skein) and light brown for the feet, Lavita orange for the nose, and Himalaya Velvet red for the sweater and hat. Any plush yarn at that weight works
  • 3.75 mm hook — sized down from the ball band so the stuffing can't show through
  • 18 mm safety eyes (set in round 10, 8 stitches apart), 4 cm pompom, fibre stuffing
  • Fine cotton thread for the face, and a long metal doll needle (~15 cm) — the sculpting doesn't work without one
