Patchwork Sweater Crochet Pattern — Sunburst Granny Square Oversized Jumper
About this pattern
Seventy-two sunburst granny squares, four panels, and a cross-shaped layout that becomes an oversized, slightly cropped jumper. A proper scrap-yarn project — every square can be a different colour.
This is a 9-page PDF in US crochet terms. The motif is the classic sunburst granny square, worked in four rounds: sixteen double crochet into a magic loop, a round of puff stitches, a round of cluster stitches with chain spaces between them, and a fourth round that squares the circle off with treble corners and a graded run of double, half double and double crochet along each side. Both the puff and the cluster are written out stitch by stitch, so the square is the only thing you need to learn — after that you make it seventy-two times.
How much to make
- 40 squares for the body — two panels of 20, laid out 5 across by 4 down
- 32 squares for the sleeves — two panels of 16, laid out 4 by 4
The assembly page draws all four panels as a single cross: front and back vertical, sleeve panels either side, with the seaming direction marked. Finished flatlay for the default size is 20 inches across the body, 22 inches long including a 4-inch ribbed hem, with 8-inch sleeves. The pattern is written as one size with notes for making it wider, longer, or with roomier sleeves by adding squares.
Sizing without grading
You change the size by changing the hook. A 4 mm hook gives a 4-inch square; a 5 mm hook gives a 5-inch square and a sweater roughly a quarter larger throughout, with the ribbing hook stepped up to match. It is the simplest sizing method in crochet and it works because every piece of this garment is built from the same unit.
Assembly and finishing
Squares are joined with single crochet in a contrast colour, so the seams read as a deliberate grid across the garment. Shoulders are closed with four short rows of single crochet worked inward from the corner. The hem, collar and cuffs are all worked the same way — sideways ribbing in back-loop-only single crochet, attached to the body two stitches at a time as you go, which means no separate band to sew on afterwards. The sleeves are cinched with a round of sc2tog before the cuff so they gather into the ribbing.
What you need
- DK / light worsted acrylic — the sample uses Hobbii Kind Feather (100% acrylic, 257 yd / 235 m per 100 g ball)
- About 1850 yd for the body (roughly 25 yd per square) plus 400 yd for the contrast colour and ribbing
- 4 mm hook and 3.5 mm for ribbing (4-inch squares), or 5 mm and 4.5 mm (5-inch squares)
- Yarn needle, scissors, measuring tape
Gauge: rounds 1–4 measure 4 × 4 inches on a 4 mm hook, or 4.5 × 4.5 inches on a 5 mm hook.
Skills used
Magic loop, double crochet, half double, treble, puff stitch, cluster stitch, single crochet seaming, sc2tog, and back-loop-only ribbing. If you can work a granny square and seam with single crochet you can make this — there is no shaping and no decreasing anywhere in the body.
