About this pattern

A sculptural lace runner in two blues and cream — layered three-dimensional flowers, puffed rosettes, tiny blossoms and veined leaves, floated on an open chain mesh so the table shows through, with a tassel at each end.

This is a 21-page illustrated PDF in US crochet terms, built as separate motifs that are joined as you go rather than sewn together at the end.

The five pieces

  • Large layered flower × 6 — eighteen rounds, and the centrepiece of the design. A disc of single crochet becomes fifteen chain spaces, each filled with a seven-double-crochet cluster petal; a second tier of puff-stitch petals is then worked into the back loops of the round below so it lifts clear of the first, and a third tier of smaller clusters sits between them in light blue. A gathered cream cup finishes the centre. Roughly 12–13 cm across, blocked.
  • Medium rosette × 8 — eight rounds, a compact puffed flower that alternates with the large ones down the runner, edged with picots.
  • Small blossom cluster × 12 — four rounds of tiny cream puffs that fill the gaps and keep the lace airy. Bead the centres if you like.
  • Sculpted leaf × 18 — worked along both sides of a short chain to a point, then given a raised central vein in cream with front- and back-post stitches, so the leaf twists rather than lying flat.
  • Tassel × 2 — 10–12 cm, 60–80 wraps, with a cream bead over the knot.

The mesh is the clever part

Motifs are linked with chain bridges worked between marked anchor points — petal tips and picots — in a ch8, ch3, ch8 rhythm that forms diamonds as it repeats, with five-chain stars where three or more motifs meet. The bridge length is your tuning dial: ch6 pulls the lace tight and dense, ch8 is standard, ch10 opens it right up. Same motifs, noticeably different runner.

Modular, so you set the length

The runner is a central column of alternating large flowers and rosettes with blossoms and leaves along both sides. Add or drop a repeat unit to make it longer or shorter, add leaves to make it wider, and the construction holds either way. Colour is equally open — the sample's two blues and cream, a single colour for a monochrome texture piece, or pastels for spring.

What you need

  • Worsted cotton (#4): approximately 180–220 g deep blue, 140–160 g light blue, 200–240 g cream
  • 3.5 mm (E) hook; optional 3.25 or 3.0 mm for tighter petals
  • Tapestry needle, at least 6 stitch markers, blocking mats and rustproof pins
  • Optional: pearl or seed beads for centres, a little fiberfill for extra petal lift

Blocking is central to this pattern, not optional. Every motif is blocked flat before joining so the bridges land evenly on the picots — the file is clear that joining unblocked motifs is what makes a runner ripple.
