About this pattern

Five hanging Christmas ornaments, each one a character head above a long crocheted ribbon that twists into a proper spiral. Santa with his list, a snowman in a top hat trailing an endless scarf, a snowy tree strung with a curling garland, a reindeer in a jingle harness, and a gingerbread man with white icing edges. They hang at 43–48 cm (17–19 in) and look like a set because they're built to one scale.

What you get

  • 43-page PDF with five complete patterns, instant download after purchase
  • US crochet terms, every piece in a numbered round/row table with its stitch count
  • Three sizes — Mini (3 turns), Standard (4 turns) and Statement (5 turns) — with the marker maths, border counts and cord lengths worked out for each
  • A stitch school section covering the foundations and the finishing techniques, plus a full troubleshooting table
  • A quality checklist to run through before you hang or gift one

The spiral — the part worth buying this for

Most crochet spirals are forced into shape by increases along one edge, which makes them pucker. This pattern does it differently: the ribbon is worked as a flat 8-hdc strip, about 88 cm long, then damp-blocked around a 6.5 cm cylinder — a covered tube or a tightly rolled towel — and left to dry into a smooth continuous helix.

Only once it's dry does a hidden centre cord go in, with nine loose anchor points that hold the curve without flattening it. The anchors follow the shape the blocking created rather than fighting a flat strip into a twist. That's why the finished spirals in the photos open into even, rounded turns instead of hard folds.

The five designs

  • Santa Magic List — dimensional Santa topper with beard, moustache and mittens, on a parchment ribbon with embroidered green stars and red ticks at set rows, finished with envelope and pencil charms
  • Snowman Endless Scarf — top hat, striped scarf with fringe, and a red-and-green striped ribbon ending in two mitten charms
  • Snowy Christmas Tree — three stacked branch tiers with a naturally curling garland spiral, snow pom-poms, a five-point star and gift-cube charms
  • Reindeer Jingle Harness — antlers, muzzle and nose, a chest piece with a cream liner, gold-edged ribbon and jingle bells
  • Gingerbread Icing Swirl — scalloped white icing running down both long edges, candy buttons, a bow and peppermint charms

Skills & materials

  • Intermediate. The basic stitches are taught, but the blocking, branching chains, amigurumi shaping and multi-part assembly want confident control
  • DK / light worsted, smooth cotton-acrylic or cotton blend, in twelve colours (a coded chart tells you which shade does what). Roughly 70–115 g per ornament
  • 3.0 mm hook for the ribbons, 2.5 mm for the stuffed parts and charms
  • 8 mm safety eyes (or embroider them), 1–1.5 mm cotton cord for the spine, stuffing, at least 10 stitch markers, and a 6.5 cm shaping form
  • Optional: beads, jingle bells, jump rings, metallic thread, fabric stiffener

Two gauges are given, and the pattern is explicit that the flat-strip gauge comes first because it sets the finished length. If your row gauge differs, it tells you to work to 88 cm rather than to a row count and divide into eight intervals — so the spiral comes out right either way.

Please note

These are decorative hanging ornaments, not toys. They contain small parts — safety eyes, beads, bells and jump rings — and should be kept away from babies, young children, pets and open flames.
