About this pattern

A 30 cm potted orchid with two open blooms, two green buds and four arching leaves, standing in a weighted brown pot. It never needs watering and never drops a petal — the houseplant for anyone who has killed a real orchid.

What you get

  • 8-page PDF, instant download after purchase
  • US crochet terms, round by round with stitch counts on every line
  • Photographs of the finished piece and of each assembly step
  • A 7-step assembly guide with exact wire lengths and stem positions

The build

The flowers are where the pattern earns its keep. Each bloom is three separate pieces: a three-lobed back petal grown from 9 dc in a magic ring, with each lobe worked out along a 9-chain and back down the other side; two front petals shaped with clusters of four trebles in a single stitch to make them flare; and a flower centre in cream and ruby, worked stitch by stitch in back loops with little chain-picot throats. Make two sets.

The pot is worked from an 8-stitch ring out to 54 stitches with a third-loop round that gives a crisp base edge, then reverses direction at round 22 so the top folds down into a proper rim. A separate soil disc in caramel is sewn in between rounds 20 and 21, over a cut foam base and a handful of glass marbles for weight — so the finished plant stands up instead of toppling.

The leaves start from a 20-chain and are shaped with five hdc worked into one stitch at the tip, then given a line of surface slip stitches down the centre that stiffens them into a natural arch.

Assembly is wire-and-glue: two 8 cm wires and one 9 cm wire wrapped in green yarn for the flower and bud stems, then a 37 cm main stem that each piece is bound onto in turn, spaced by finger-widths so the blooms stagger up the stalk the way a real orchid does.

Skills & materials

  • Intermediate. Magic ring, sc, hdc, dc, tr, BLO, third-loop and surface slip stitch, working both sides of a chain, plus careful assembly — the pattern is explicit that neat seams make or break this one

  • 2.2 mm hook, tapestry needle, fibrefill
  • Galvanised wire (16 or 18 gauge), silicone craft glue, 5 mm EVA foam for the pot base (alternatives listed), and glass marbles for weight
