About this pattern

Ten daisy squares with little embroidered smiley faces, joined into a ring that slips over your steering wheel — plus a matching two-square seat belt cover that buttons on. One file, both pieces.

A 21-page photo-tutorial PDF in US crochet terms, written step by step with a picture for nearly every stage.

Check this before you buy

The cover is made to fit a steering wheel 14.5–15 inches in diameter, which covers most cars but is worth measuring first. Gauge matters here more than on a blanket: each finished square should be 3.5 × 3.5 inches, and the pattern tells you to change hook size rather than tension to hit it.

How it's built

Each square starts as a daisy. A circle of twelve double crochet becomes twenty-four, then a round of cluster stitches with chain-2 spaces between them forms the petals — the cluster is written out in six numbered steps and then again in plain prose, so it's genuinely teachable if you've never worked one. A final round of 3 dc and 3 hdc groups squares the daisy off, with chain-2 corners.

From the second square onward you join as you go, working the final round of each new square directly into the edge of the last. The pattern explains why it chose this method over seaming: not every stitch gets anchored, so the finished ring keeps some stretch — which is what lets it pull over the wheel rim.

Trim, ruffle and faces

A round of double crochet on a 5 mm hook firms up each edge, then a ruffle of 3-dc shells runs around both sides. There's a neat colour-change technique for the trim: start the last double crochet of a square, then finish it with the next square's colour, so the change lands exactly on the seam.

The smiley faces go on last, embroidered with black yarn and a tapestry needle — four pages of close photographs walk through placing the eyes and following the line between the double crochet rows to stitch the mouth, then passing back over it to fill the gaps.

The seat belt cover

Two daisies joined the same way, edged in single crochet with a ruffle down one side, and three buttons that pass through the gaps in the ruffle on the opposite edge — so it clips on and off the belt without any fastenings to buy.

Finishing it properly

Once the cover is on, the pattern strongly recommends securing it rather than leaving it to grip on its own, and gives three ways: stitching all the way around through both sides with a tapestry needle, tying shorter lengths of yarn every few inches, or fitting a rubber grip under the cover. Worth doing — a cover that can rotate on the wheel is not what you want while driving.
