Heart Tapestry Shoulder Bag Crochet Pattern — Colourwork Hobo Bag
About this pattern
A curved shoulder bag worked in two-colour tapestry crochet, with concentric hearts rippling out across the whole front and a matching striped strap. It's 26 cm wide, 20 cm tall, with a 45 cm strap — the proportions of a proper everyday bag rather than a novelty one, and it looks completely different in each colourway.
What you get
- 22-page PDF, instant download after purchase
- Tapestry charts and full written instructions for every part — body, base and strap. Read whichever you prefer, or use the chart as a visual check while you follow the words
- Step photographs of the colour change and the assembly
- Five clearly separated sections: main body, base, strap, joining, and the final edging
Why this one's a good first tapestry project
The whole bag is single crochet. Nothing else — no shaping stitches, no increases to track, no new stitch to learn. All the pattern comes from changing colour, which means the only genuinely new skill is the colour change itself, and that gets its own illustrated page at the front.
The technique is explained properly: you complete the last stitch of the old colour by pulling the new colour through the final yarn-over, so the change happens cleanly a stitch early and no stray loop shows on the right side. The pattern also shows how to carry the unused colour inside the stitches — holding it along the top of the row and working over it — so there are no floats on the back and almost no ends to weave in at the end.
The written rows spell out every colour block, e.g. "4 sc in C1, change colour, 5 sc in C2, change colour, 4 sc in C1…", so you can work the entire bag without ever reading a chart if charts aren't your thing.
The build
The body starts as a 37-chain rectangle worked flat in rows, with the heart motif building as you go. The base is a separate 37-chain panel with its own chart, and the strap is a long patterned band — eight rows repeated seven times, and the pattern tells you exactly how to lengthen it if you want a longer drop, keeping the repeat intact.
Assembly is single crochet through both layers, and the optional final trim runs in one continuous line around the opening and down the strap. The instructions are refreshingly honest about the fiddly parts: where there aren't exact stitches to work into, it just tells you to place them where you find space and keep the line straight.
Skills & materials
- Advanced beginner. If you can single crochet and chain, you can make this — the colourwork is the only new thing
- Three colours of yarn, weight 3 or 4. The sample uses a weight 3 milk cotton; the pattern suggests going up to weight 4 if you want a slightly bigger bag
- 4 mm hook or larger, scissors, yarn needle, optional stitch markers
Yarn and hook are deliberately open — the pattern notes your dimensions will shift with your choice, and gives its own measurements as the reference point.
