About this pattern

Six granny pentagons joined into a ring, finished with a cream scalloped edge and a pair of tie cords at the front.
It sits over a shirt collar or a plain knit and does all the work of an outfit on its own. About 30 cm across and roughly 6–8 hours start to finish.

What you get

  • 7-page PDF, instant download after purchase
  • US crochet terms, written round by round
  • A stitch chart for the pentagon motif, colour-coded by round so you can see exactly where every corner and cluster sits
  • A joining schematic showing the six-motif layout and all five seams
  • Three colourways worked out for you — Autumn, Berry and Soft — plus a scrappy multicolour version

The build

The motif is a pentagon rather than a square, which is the whole trick: five corners means six of them curve into a ring that sits flat on the shoulders instead of a square's rigid grid. Four rounds, a different colour each, fastened off as you go — centre, petals, contrast, then a cream outer round that frames every motif the same way.

The joining is slip-stitched or single-crocheted through outer loops only, five seams, leaving motifs 1 and 6 open at the front for the tie. Work it wrong sides together for a flat seam or right sides together if you want the seam to stand proud as a design line.

The edging is a two-row neckline in cream then a dark contrast, and a scalloped outer edge of 5-dc shells — with the shells worked into the ch-2 corner at each point so the pentagon tips stay crisp instead of rounding off. The ties are 60–80 chains slip-stitched back on themselves into a firm round cord, finished with a small bobble.

Skills & materials

  • Easy / advanced beginner. Magic ring, ch, sc, dc, sl st and 3-dc clusters — if you've made a granny square you can make this
  • Cotton DK or sport weight in 5 colours, about 20 g of each (a little more of the edging colour)
  • 3.0–3.5 mm hook, tapestry needle, stitch markers
  • A blocking mat and pins — not optional here. The motifs are pinned into regular pentagons and steamed before joining, which is what makes the six of them meet cleanly

A finished motif should measure 7–8 cm per side. There's a bigger-collar variation too: add a fifth round in cream on all six motifs.

A note on this pattern

This pattern was written from photographs rather than worked up from a tested original, so stitch counts may need small adjustments to suit your own yarn and tension. Make one motif first and check it against the 7–8 cm measurement before cutting into the rest of your yarn. The construction is simple and the chart shows the structure clearly, but we'd rather you knew that going in than found out at motif four.
