Black Cat Bag Collection Crochet Pattern — 3 Colourwork Tote Bags
About this pattern
Three colourwork tote bags, each with a big graphic black cat worked straight into the fabric. A cat sprawled asleep across an orange-and-white split, a cat sitting up with a steaming cup of coffee, and a huge wide-eyed cat face filling the whole front. Each finishes at roughly 29 cm tall × 32 cm wide — a real everyday tote, not a novelty pouch.
What you get
- 70-page PDF with three complete bag patterns — the largest file we stock
- Full colourwork charts for the front and back of every bag, plus the row-by-row written version of each. Every square on the chart is one single crochet
- US crochet terms
- A step-photo colour-change tutorial at the start of each pattern, showing the change on both the right side and the wrong side, and what your work should look like after ten rows
- Handle, assembly and finishing instructions for each bag
The three bags
- Sleeping Cat — a black cat draped across the join between an orange top and a white bottom, tail hanging down the front. Orange handles
- Cat with a Cup — a cat sitting upright holding a steaming mug, worked on white with a light terracotta back, bottom panel and handles. This one has a separate crocheted base, so it stands up on its own
- Cat Face — a cream bag with an enormous black cat head filling the front, ears running off the top edge. Black back panel
How the colourwork works
These are worked flat in single crochet, back and forth — the whole picture comes from changing colour, with no shaping anywhere. The pattern uses the bobbin method: you wind each colour onto its own bobbin or scrap of card and pick them up as the chart calls for them, rather than carrying unused yarn along the row. That's what keeps these designs crisp at this scale — a cat's whisker or the steam off a cup is only a stitch or two wide, and carried yarn would show through.
The front of each bag is charted bottom to top, first row right to left, and the written rows are labelled RS and WS throughout so you always know which direction you're reading. There's a plain-language warning about tension at the colour joins — not too tight, not loose enough to gap — which is the single thing that makes or breaks a project like this.
Skills & materials
- Intermediate. Only two stitches, chain and single crochet. The difficulty is purely in reading a chart and managing several colours at once — if you've done any cross-stitch or pixel-chart work this will feel familiar
- DK / size 3 yarn. Sample uses Gazzal Baby Bamboo (50% acrylic / 50% bamboo, 50 g / 115 m) in orange and white, and Gazzal Baby Love (45% acrylic / 55% modal) in black
- 2.5 mm hook — small for the yarn, which is what gives the dense fabric a bag needs
- Scissors, tapestry needle, and bobbins (or cardboard to wind yarn onto)
